New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

SF Site's newest arrivals include some tantalizing teasers: forthcoming editions from James P. Blaylock, David J. Schow, Robert Sheckley, James Blish, Caitlín R. Kiernan, David A. Page and more. Plus we've got new works from Kevin J. Anderson, Tad Williams, Margaret Atwood, Joel Rosenberg, and others.

But first, one of my own recommendations:

  • Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi (Pantheon Books, hc graphic novel, 160 pages, June 2003, USA & Canada -- first published in France, 2002)
This book is neither speculative nor fiction, but it is a damn good book. It's the true, first person account of a girl who lived in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the subsequent war with Iraq, which began in 1980. Ok, bring on the Spiegleman parallels: difficult and highly person subject matter expressed in graphic novel format. Like Spiegleman, Satrapi tells the story from a personal point of view, and reveals even those closest to her in their full hypocrisy.
At first glance, the artwork seems simple, almost childish -- which is appropriate accompaniment to "the story of a childhood." But Satrapi manages to convey a considerable amount of subtlety and emotion in her deceptively simple and two-dimensional art.

(Books are listed alphabetically by author. Only books received are noted.)
