Reservoir Chronicle: Tsubasa, Book 3 Reservoir Chronicle: Tsubasa, Book 3 by CLAMP

Syaoran, Fai, and Kurogane have finished their mission in the Hanshin Republic. The recovery of her first feather means that Sakura has awakened with just a single memory of her life. Now, the group travels to the town of Ryonfi in the medieval fantasy world of Koryo. Aboji, a wandering magician deposed the former ruler of the country and now uses his magical prowess over the elements to unjustly subjugate the people and destroy their livelihoods through inflated taxes and thuggish enforcers.

The opening story arc concerns Angel-san, Japan's answer to the Ouija board. Himawari tells Yuko about a school haunted by evil after students took up the innocent-seeming occult practise, and Yuko sends our hero Kimihiro and his spiritually-inclined rival Domeki to investigate. Although American occultists frequently speak of the dangers of the Ouija, this series seems to have refreshingly unique view of where the true dangers lurk. There's also time for a little cross-over with Tsubasa and some Chobits inspired silliness.

Kimihiro Watanuki, Yuko's indentured servant, learns more about the strange world of occult Japan as he follows the witch first to a series of fortune tellers, and then to an ancient temple for a night of ghost stories. Kimihiro continues to try to win the heart of fellow student Himawari. However, he is now paired off in a classic rivalry for her heart with the far more dashing and athletic Domeki, a temple priest. Kimihiro's curse means he constantly attracts harmful spirits that, coincidentally, Domeki can exorcise; even if they can't stand each other, fate seems determined to force them together.

Syaoran would do anything for his princess Sakura, whom he loves deeply. Her memory has been taken away, the pieces of it divided into magical feathers that he must travel through different worlds to regain. He is accompanied by Kurogane, a tall, crabby warrior who has patience only for action, Fai, his sweetly smiling, loquacious opposite, and Mokona, a small, chubby bunny-like creature whose powers of detecting the feathers and translating languages make him invaluable.

Kimihiro Watanuki works as a servant for the mysterious Yuko Ichihara, a time-space witch of considerable power. In the beginning she sends Sakura and Syaoran, along with two others who have their own agendas, on a quest. She sends with them Mokona Modoki, a cute, long-eared creature that Yuko and another wizard made to give to the travelers. It has a twin, just like it except black, that stays with Yuko, becoming a pet of sorts, but also able to let her know what's going on with the others.

The creators seem to have hit their stride in the stories collected here and it's now worth it to get on board (though you might want to dig up a copy of volume 1 first). Syaoran and his traveling companions, Fai D. Flowright and Kurogane, begin to entertain both as individual characters and as a team. Each has a real personality and it is especially fun to see them played against each other by the skillful authors, especially with furry sidekick Mokona as a comic foil.

Watanuki Kimihiro finds himself drawn to Yuko Ichihara's mysterious shop where wishes are granted in return for something unique and irreplaceable belonging to the customer. Before he knows it, he finds himself turning over an heirloom pocket watch and agreeing to indefinite servitude in return for freedom from his curse. In each issue, Yuko, attended by a pair of weird twins, grants wishes and explores metaphysical concepts in a sometimes grim, sometimes madcap Twilight Zone Japan.
