Jani Kilian is a human woman who has unwillingly been infected with genetic material from an alien species. Jani is slowly metamorphosing into a hybrid creature, neither human nor idomeni. Some view her as a bridge between the two cultures and races -- an ambassador who can pave the way to increased understanding and contact -- while others see her as an abomination.

18 years earlier, Captain Jani Kilian was caught up in a bloody uprising on the planet Shera, and in the chaos she was forced to kill her corrupt commanding officer. Lacking witnesses and evidence, she deserted the military and went underground to avoid court martial. But now her failing health has forced her to seek medical treatment, and the clinic immediately identifies Jani because she is unique.

Despite its martial title, this isn't military SF (with all the carnage and cardboard characters that sub-genre usually implies). Rather, this sequel to the author's well-received first novel, Code of Conduct, is a labyrinthine thriller emphasizing intrigue and personal politics. She has imagined an impressive future of believable characters, credibly convoluted political affairs, disturbingly realistic aliens, and fearsome technology.

Captain Jani Kilian almost died in a civil war among the idomeni, an alien race enough like humans to make their vast differences disturbing. Framed for treason and then presumed dead in an explosion, she has spent the years since in hiding. After the blast, her doctors put her together with illegal experiments that combined human and idomeni genes. Now it is catching up with her. Is she dying -- or changing into a new species that could threaten the existence of both humans and idomeni?
