On differences in editing a magazine and books:
"It's a faster schedule, for one thing. Editing a magazine is like running wind-sprints, while editing books is more like middle-distance running (and in a few cases, it's like a marathon). It's also a bigger playing field -- in book publishing, I may only work with twelve or fourteen writers a year, while with the magazine, I may be publishing that many people in an issue."

On precision in stories:
"First person narrators should not always write pitch-perfect prose. Sometimes the violence -- physical or mental -- described by a story requires rougher edges. There's such a thing as being too civilized or intellectual in your approach. A rough oil painting is as effective as a precise, photo-realistic portrait, sometimes more so."

On squids:
"A squid is a sophisticated creature with many attributes far superior to human beings. For example, although I can blush from embarrassment or whatever, I can't so control my skin that I can change the color and pattern of it at the drop of a hat. Neither can I use one of my eyes as a flashlight like some squid can. Nor can I automatically neutralize the effects of nerve gas when they come into contact with my neurons. Of course, I'm also not likely to wind up in the stomach of a sperm whale like Giant Squid do, so there are certainly trade-offs."
